A Postal Solution

By Matt Heavens, Branch 725
Philadelphia Inquirer, 3/31/09

By law, Postmaster General Jack Potter will need an act of Congress to reduce mail delivery to five days ("Chief says post office running out of cash," Thursday).

If Potter wants to save money, perhaps he should look at eliminating the glut of postmasters. Do we really need postmasters at towns that are only a few miles apart? Four regional county postmasters would do the trick.

The remaining postmasters could be returned to the workforce to help move the mail. Not only would it save money, but it also would improve morale by mail carriers being able to watch the former postmasters do the jobs they tell us are so easy to do. Matt Heavens
