The Region 12 Rap Session
For those of you who have never attended a Rap Session or even know what goes on at a Rap Session, this page is for you.
The Rap Session is the number one training tool put on by the Nalc national office. It's their chance to spread the lastest information out to shop stewards or any other union member. During the year, every region across the country has a chance to experience this training. A national officer is usually in attendance to give the address from the national executive board's
perspective. At the time it is held, you are getting the latest information directly from the mouth of the speakers. You also getting indivualized training on all the major issues that we face as union memebers. There are smaller meetings that take place for contract issues, article 8, effective grievance writing, etc. There is also major emphasis placed on OWCP and other detailed issues.
The Rap Session also provides you the opportunity to meet face to face with the people from the union that you talk to over the phone all year. It gives you another opportunity to address new issues that have arised in your office, etc.
In summary, the Region 12 Rap Session is a great chance to get up-to-date training that provides you with handouts that you can take back to your office and refer to for years to come. For shop stewards in our branch, while attendance is not mandatory, it is essential to you becoming the union official that your office entrusts you to be. So if not this year, please try to make the next Rap Session. It is an important element(along with all the other events scheduled for the year) in your development.
